Economic aspects of American sports; fan demand; advertising; team output decisions; league/conference organization; government and sports.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the motivation for the demand for sports and its relation to revenues
- Understand how the profit motive drives owners and league choices about quality
- Understand the role of monopoly power in sports markets
- Understand labor-management relationships and bargaining
- Understand public choice lessons with respect to government and sports business (stadium subsidies and leases, special tax status, antitrust exemption)
